5 Business Growth Mistakes That Cost Female Business Owners Time, Money, and Momentum
Jul 23, 2026
Can I tell you something I wish more female business owners heard?
Business growth isn't supposed to feel this hard.
Yes, entrepreneurship is challenging. There will always be seasons that stretch you. But if your business constantly feels like it's asking you to sacrifice your time, your energy, and your sanity just to keep up, I don't think the answer is simply to work harder.
I think, more often than not, we're trying to grow our businesses using strategies that weren't designed for the lives we're actually living.
I've fallen into that trap more times than I can count. I've chased the shiny strategy, tried to do all the things, and convinced myself that if I could just become more disciplined, I'd finally feel caught up.
Instead, I just felt exhausted.
Over the years, I've started to notice the same patterns—not just in my own business, but in the women I coach every day. Here are five of the biggest mistakes I see, and why they quietly steal our time, money, and momentum.
1. Trying to do everything at once.
We're entrepreneurs. Ideas are kind of our thing.
One minute you're focused on your website. The next you're thinking about launching a podcast, creating a new offer, starting a newsletter, or trying the latest platform everyone is talking about.
None of those things are bad. But when everything becomes a priority, it's incredibly hard to build momentum. Sometimes the fastest way forward is choosing one thing and giving it your full attention.
2. Borrowing someone else's business model.
It's so easy to look at another entrepreneur and think, I'll just do what she's doing.
What we don't see is everything behind the scenes that makes her strategy work. Her schedule. Her support. Her team. Her season of life.
A strategy that works beautifully for someone else might be completely unsustainable for you—and that's okay. Your business should fit your life, not someone else's.
3. Letting urgency run the show.
Emails. Notifications. Last-minute requests.
It's easy to spend an entire day reacting to whatever feels most urgent, only to realize you never got to the work that actually moves your business forward.
One question I come back to often is: Is this truly urgent, or is it just demanding my attention?
Those aren't always the same thing.
4. Mistaking busy for productive.
We've all had those days where we're constantly working but don't feel like we've accomplished much.
Sometimes we're busy because we're avoiding the work that feels uncomfortable. It's easier to tweak a Canva graphic than have a sales conversation. Easier to reorganize your notes than finally put your offer out into the world.
Business growth doesn't come from staying busy. It comes from consistently doing the work that matters.
5. Ignoring the season you're in.
This one might be the most important of all.
The strategy that worked for you two years ago might not fit your life today. Maybe your family has different needs. Maybe your capacity has changed. Maybe your business has grown.
That's not failure. That's life.
Instead of building your business around the version of yourself you think you should be, build it around the woman you are today. That's where sustainable growth begins.
The Bottom Line
If you recognize yourself in one—or maybe all five—of these mistakes, please don't see them as proof that you're doing business wrong.
See them as an invitation to pause.
You don't need to overhaul your business this week. You don't need another course, another strategy, or another colour-coded planner.
You probably just need to make one small shift.
Protect your time a little more. Simplify one thing. Let go of one strategy that isn't serving you anymore.
Because momentum doesn't come from doing everything.
It comes from consistently doing the next right thing.
